You’ve probably seen them in all of your favorite crime movies or television shows. You may remember them from the famous scene in Meet The Parents where Ben Stiller nervously gets questioned by Robert De Niro. However, you probably have no idea how private investigators use polygraph detectors on cheating spouses.
A polygraph detector uses four to six sensors to record:
- Breathing Rate: The faster a person breathes during a tough question, the more likely they are lying to you.
- Pulse: A sensor is placed on the fingertips to determine the rate of a possible cheater’s pulse.
- Blood Pressure: If your blood pressure raises during a question, you may not be entirely truthful with your response.
- Perspiration: When a person is lying, it’s more likely he or she will sweat during a tough question rather than play it cool.
A polygraph test usually begins with a series of normal questions, in order to establish the normal signals for the individuals. After about four or five normal questions, the examiner will begin to ask more targeted questions, simultaneously glancing at the detector and recording each response. A needle will accurately record the changes in each sensor. displaying a wider range during a significant change (faster blood pressure, increased pulse).
